Loved the sheer look of the beach. Serenity was the word that comes in mind. The nice shallow waters is perfect for toddlers and great for long walks on the beach.
One of my favorite Auckland spots. Only 45 min from the city. Awesome views. Good waves.
Beautiful beach but be careful in Winter if you aren't a confident swimmer as there are often rips and the waves can be very strong. Best place for a relaxing walk and not too far from the city.
I love Muriwai beach. So much room to do so many fun activities with kids and adults alike. You don't have to swim. The waves are amazing but you do need to swim between the flags. The life guards n know where it's safe. The black sand is amazing to build sandcastles with. This is my viking ship
Great beach on a good day. Impressive on a stormy day. Wild west coast.
Great day-trip from Auckland. The drive is a nice winding road once you get of the motorway. Plenty of parking in the car park. Very scenic black-sand beach, we had our engagement photos taken here. Be sure to take the short walk to the gannet colony as it's an unusual and interesting sight. Nice beach for surfing or just to watch expert surfers do their thing.
. (12/2017) A black sand beach. Pretty big in size. Clean and well maintained. Big parking space. Beautiful views all around. Another tourist attraction Muriwai Gannet Colony is close by. There are different trails from breach going towards Gannet Colony and Maori bay. There is a little playground for kids near the parking space. A good place to spend a lazy sunny day at. You can easily spot couple of surfers on such a day. Seating and benches are provided at regular distances outside the beach area for taking rest and enjoying the views. Spacious parking area. Wheelchair parking is available and there is wheelchair accessible entrance. Public restroom is close to the parking at this location.
West coast beach's don't get any better than Muriwai. Great for sunbathing or just a long walk. Bit of a heads up - the black sand can get very hot (foot wear is recommended) and best to swim between the flags as the current is strong and can catch out even the best of swimmers. Also a great spot for surfing too.
